If a seller has Paypal as a payment option but refuses to accept Paypal and instead asks for a credit card payment, must I use my card?
Nov 16, 2012 10:05 PM

A seller I bought an item from has Paypal as a payment option, but when I attempted to purchase the item, it would not go through. After I sent a message to the seller, I was told only credit card payments were accepted through a phone number. Looking again through the auction description, I was able to find that information.

My question is, if Paypal is a payment option that is listed and can be selected, must I still conform to using my credit card because the auction description says I must? Who is at fault, me as the buyer for overlooking that auction rule, or the seller for having Paypal as a payment option but not accepting it?

If the listing says they accept paypal, they must accept it. I would be careful paying with a credit card (and you do not have to) unless the seller has an online method to accept it that is encrypted. Never give your CC number to the seller directly.

Give us the item number to check. This may be a listing violation and possibly even a scammer.

I would never give my cc info to a stranger, that's why we have Paypal.  Plus if Paypal is listed, he is supposed to accept it.

Yes, give us the item #, we can look at the listing.

I would say to report him, but would like to check the listing first.  We can tell if he's a new seller & has Paypal limits that he's trying to avoid or if he's just a bad seller overall.  What country he's from, etc.

From the listing, in big letters:

PLEASE READ OUR CONTACT, PAYMENT AND SHIPPING DETAILS BEFORE BIDDING.

WE DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL.

WE ONLY ACCEPT CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS OVER THE PHONE.

However, in the Payment Tab, the seller says PayPal is Accepted!

Yes, there are policy violations!

1. ALL payments (including direct credit card payments) must go through the eBay Gateway ... not merely by phone

2. eBay frowns upon sellers putting their phone numbers in listings.

3.  The listing said PAyPal is accepted, but it is apparently not.

Report it!

Wow ... over 8000 FB, and violating eBay policies!

Makes one wonder ...

Upon further research, that seller did not include the PayPal logo & payment option in a sample of their previous listings.  Apparently somebody slipped, and included the PayPal logo in the listing under discussion.

The seller goofed ... whether eBay will do anything about it is unknown at this time.

The absence of using an eBay Gateway to pay ... instead, demanding CC payment by phone ... seems to violate this policy:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/pay/payment_gateways.html

One option would be to attempt to pay via PayPal, and then report the seller as nonperforming after they refuse the payment.

Use of appropriate feedback would also be interesting, since that seller's feedback seems to be fairly good.  I guess lots of buyers do not mind giving their CC number via phone.

I already attempted to pay via Paypal and found out the e-mail that is to receive the payment is unconfirmed. That raised a red flag for me. Also, the domain that e-mail belongs to does not seem to exist.

I will probably not be playing the hero of the day, but I would be content with just having the seller agree to null the purchase (if I did follow the guidelines in the seller's auction, Tuesday would be the next day where I would be able to pay and by that time the payment being due in 7 days will be past the limit. It did not help that the seller took 3 days to answer my original question).

Of course, eBay customer service is almost non-existent now, so I could not ask them directly to what the best course of action would be before I would take the action of reporting the seller and hoping that a violation would grant me a release from this transaction.

eBay customer service is almost non-existent now,

Try asking CS anyway, and let us know (here, if there are any reply slots left, or via a new thread) what they say.

The multiple violations, that seem to escape eBay Trust & Safety, are quite disconcerting.  If eBay mandates sellers with merchant accounts use the eBay gateway, but does not enforce that mandate, that opens the door to even more problems.
