Shill bidding is when a seller, with a 2nd ID, or their "friend" bids on their own listing to inflate the price - against policy, against the law

Shill bidding is when a seller either bids on his own item or has a close friend or relative do the bidding for him.  It is an attempt to increase the price of the item.  Shill bidding is a felony in all states and you can do prison time for it.  eBay has many programs running in the background to catch shill bidding and it rarely happens on eBay.

You usually see shill bidding comments from new users who do not understand how eBay's proxy bidding works and they feel that shill bidding is taking place.

The correct term is "SHILL" bidding.  It is when the seller  drives up the price of an auction, either by using another ebay ID they may have or having friends or family bid on the item....SHILL bidding is a FELONY in all 50 states.  Ebay has numerous things in place to watch for and to catch this illegal act.
