Help fix the problem. I mistakenly added to the shopping basket, which I did not want to buy. What do I do?

If you no longer have the option to remove the item from your cart -- you have bought it. You will need to pay for it or take an strike for non-payment.

Next time, add everything and anything you‘re looking at to your WATCH List. This way, you can go back and read through it all again, and make comparisons or decisions before you bid/buy.

On eBay, the cart is for purchasing only. It is not for holding, or comparing, or for thinking about.

CART = buy

WATCH = think about

If you simply used the "Add to Cart" button and didn't do anything further to commit yourself to the item, there will be a "Remove" button (or similar wording) near the item when you go to the Cart.  Click it.

If you did commit yourself to buying the item (used the Buy It Now button followed up by the Commit to Buy button, won an auction, had a seller accept your Best Offer or accepted a counteroffer from the seller, Added to Cart and then requested a total or paid) the button will not be there, and you are obligated to pay (or already have, as the case may be).  You may beg the seller to let you off the hook, but s/he is under no obligation to do so and if s/he doesn't you should not hold that against him/her.  If s/he does agree to let you off the hook be very prompt at agreeing to a Transaction Cancellation request (do NOT wait for the refund before agreeing--it is your fault that the transaction is being cancelled and the seller should protect him/herself against your changing your mind again).
