Someone won/bought one of my items and paid with an ECHECK?! Funds won't clear for SEVEN days?!
Nov 21, 2012 08:38 AM

I just recvd notice from Paypal that someone paid for an auction item with an echeck?!?!  I have Paypal in buyer restrictions... but I guess that's through them?!  The part that bothers me is that Paypal said not to mail item for 7 days (that's when funds will be cleared).  This is frustrating... as if it does NOT clear, I have to wait this long to relist?!

Does anyone has experience w/echeck?  So if someone uses it to pay, we basically have to sit back and wait for their funds to clear?!?!  And if they don't... what's the recourse?

An e-check is simply a back up funding method using the buyer's checking account if enough funds are not currently available in their PayPal account. No need to be concerned.

Most clear in less than 7 days, more like 5.

Ship as soon as PayPal says it's O.K. to ship.

IF you accept PayPal, you accept ALL methods of PayPal payments, including e-check.  That is the Policy.

If the check bounces (twice), or if you are otherwise unpaid, you have the same recourse as does any seller when there is a nonpayer.

(You do know how to file the Unpaid Item Report, don'tcha?)

If you want to avoid taking e-checks, you can list your items as Fixed-Price, Immediate Payment Required.  Since an e-check is not immediately paid, e-check payers will not fulfil the conditions of sale.

I had a buyer with an e-check from Paypal just the other day too!

I used to have them quite regularly, but they have really dropped off.  Funds will typically process thru just fine on the date Paypal says or even a bit before that sometimes.

DO NOT ship the item until it you are told the e-check has cleared.  Nothing to worry about, it just takes a little more time.  I believe the e-check results from a person not wanting to have a credit card on file... and just like a real check, when Paypal goes to get the funds from the person's bank account, they need to wait to make sure the funds are there.

Thanks for the replies :)

I looked at her feedback and saw she "dinged" someone for taking too long to ship.  I just hope she knows I'm waiting on HER money... THAT will be the shipping hold-up, not me.

Appreciate the answers :)

Thanks sunsetred!  :)

Like I mentioned above, I'm just worried she's going to ding me for not shipping it faster... when in reality, I'm waiting on her funds to clear.  But maybe ebay/paypal knows that, and won't let her ding me for that?!

Some communication with your buyer should save your stars.  Shoot them a message to very nicely thank them for their purchase and let them know that you have seen their e-check payment via paypal and that you will ship the item just as soon as the payment has cleared (which is expected to happen on XX-XX-XXXX date).

Do send a message thanking them for payment and mentioning that PayPal expects their eCheck to clear on date.

Do also make sure you keep checking PayPal for the red flag to be cleared and OK to SHIP

DO NOT wait for an email nor your My eBay icons to change.

Both can be hours even days late.

You do want to ship asap. Never ship before they clear though. They can and do bounce. PayPal puts them through again in that case.
