do i have to refund the full amount when selling with free shipping?
Nov 10, 2012 03:50 PM

Hello and thank you for reading my post. I am a seller and have a issue right now regarding return of an item i sold with free shipping.

here are the details. i sold a part with a description as follows

1993-1997 Nissan Altima Power Mirror *OEM* Black (Driver Side)

The buyer emailed me a day after receiving the item that he was returning the item for a refund because he purchased it by mistake. He said he meant to order a mirror for a 2005 model.

Do I have to refund the full amount because i sold it with free shipping? The original cost of shipping was $ 10.80. Can i deduct that from the total amount to be refunded?

This was in my opinion either, the stupidest mistake or something will be wrong when i receive the returned mirror. Please if there are any sellers out there having the same experience, please comment. thanks in advance

If you receive your original item back in good condition, you should refund the full amount of the price that the buyer paid.

eBay's take on this... since the buyer bears the expense of return shipping, this splits the burden of shipping expenses as evenly & fairly as possible.

On the other-hand, if you receive a damaged item, or not the original item you shipped... in the absence of an active eBay dispute, it'll be up to you and the buyer to come to terms privately.

When there is an active dispute, eBay has a sellers' appeals process when items are returned damaged, or aren't the original items sold to the buyer.

Good luck!

If you paid to ship the item to the buyer and the buyer paid to ship it back then everybody is even, you paid for the first shipping and the buyer paid for the return shipping.  You need to refund the original payment.
