Buyer asked for my paypal email address. Is this normal?
Nov 16, 2012 08:33 PM

I just sold my first item. The buyer messaged me & asked for my paypal email address. This seems odd to me. I have purchased several items & never asked the seller for that imformation. Also, I posted free shipping to United States. Buyer is from India. What should I do?

Buyers are not to see your email address until AFTER they pay!  Do not send it.  If your shipping was to the US only, invoice for a high shipping charge and ignore the request, and file a dispute when he doesn't pay (or ship if he does).

You were supposed to set BLOCKS in your seller account buyer prefs.  Do so, for the future.

Do not give your PayPal address out.

Your buyer can click the pay button and pay from there.

There is not need for any buyer to have your PayPal email address.

It could be a scam or just a unacknowledged buyer.

Thank you for your help.  Can I cancel the purchase and relist the item?

When a buyer asks for your email address in order to pay you, that's always a red flag.   Scammers prowl  Ebay looking for newbie sellers who maybe don't know the ropes and are selling expensive items.

They ask for the seller's email address and then send the seller a fake email that looks like it came from paypal saying the item has been paid and it's OK to ship.   If you look into your Paypal account, the money is not there.

Legitimate buyers pay through the "Pay Now" button on the Ebay listing.  they don't need your email address.

Can I cancel the purchase and relist the item?

Assuming they did not pay ...

If you want your Final Value Fees refunded, and the ability to make a Second Chance Offer, or relist correctly,  you must do one of the following:

1. Complete the Unpaid Item process  (usually preferred)

 or

2. Convince the buyer to agree to a Cancellation Request,

Both options are available in the eBay Resolution Center

Here is a comparison of the timelines, pros, and cons of filing an Unpaid Item (UPI) report versus a Cancellation Request (CR)

Also consider putting the bad  bidder on your Blocked Bidders List.  (Stop back here for more information if you need to learn how to do that).
