As a seller, can I change acceptable payment method after a buyer has bid on my item? I want buyer to pay upon pick-up, not Paypal.

As a seller, can I change acceptable payment method after a buyer has bid on my item? I want buyer to pay upon pick-up, not Paypal.

I am selling a treadmill, which in the listing says to please come by to look at the treadmill, but I have a guy who bid on the treadmill, but has not even contacted me about coming to look at it. Plus, he's asking if he can pay with Bill Me Later (which would be fine), but this is a pick-up item and the buyer should come to look at it before he bids... right? But he already bid and is not answering my question about whether he is local. My auction is ending in 2 hours and Ebay is not letting me cancel the auction!

Can I change the payment method? I tried to edit my listing, but I don't see where I can change it to not accept PayPal. I want buyer to pay cash on pick-up! Thanks for any input.

eBay requires all listings to have at least one "approved / electronic" means of paying.  However, for picked-up items, cash is indeed acceptable (and recommended!)

Your listing includes the statement:

Local Pickup
You can contact your seller to arrange to pay for and pick up your item.

So, you can tell the buyer that you accept only cash (or equivalent) at the time of pickup.

Do NOT accept PayPal or equivalent, because you would have no required online proof of delivery.

Sounds like you are stuck with what you asked for in the listing. You cannot edit an auction listing in the last 12 hours.

You also will not be able to demand a bidder to come by and check out the item. Maybe he lives close enough to pick up, but too far away to want to come look? Listings should have clear descriptions and bunches of photos that show any problems.

Local pick up should only have cash on pick up as the payment method, as you will have no way to prove delivery for paypal to check. Scam artist buyers look for stuff like this, as they know ebay's buyer protection program covers them, and will refund their cash and leave you holding the empty bag. If you already told the bidder that "bill me later" was ok, how you going to back out now?

You have a real dilemma now to decide on what to do. Good luck ebayer.

About all you can do at this late hour is cancel this buyer's bid, put his ID on your Blocked Bidders List... then babysit the listing in hopes no one else bids before it expires.

Good luck!

leo is correct.

You still have time to cancel the bid!

I said in the listing that I don't have any actual photos of the treadmill because it's in storage. I listed it for my sister and she didn't want to deal with going to storage to get it out and take photos (i know! my fault for going along with it when I know photos are vital!) So, now, this person has bid and is not responding to my questions about whether he is local or not. Seems very fishy that they would not make arrangements to come look at the treadmill, when it says in the listing to contact me to make arrangements to come look at it. I think this is a scam, but maybe I'm paranoid and overreacting! So much scamming. I have another listing for my sister's diamond ring and some scammer person emailed me and said he wanted it... I could tell it was a scam and thank goodness Ebay sent me an email telling me this person is a scammer! But now I'm stuck dealing with this treadmill buyer, who's not writing me back. I tried to cancel his bid but got notice from Ebay that I cannot! So, I guess I have to wait for the auction to end in an hour and find out what happens next... if this person pays or not... and if they do, then what?  Crap! I know, my fear of the unknown is freaking me out!!

Wow! Thank you everyone who answered my question. I WAS ABLE TO CANCEL THE GUY'S BID AFTER ALL, thank you EVERYONE, and especially pi_square_ for pasting the link to cancel buyer's bid. I did cancel it and now of course I'm worried that he might have been a legit buyer... too stressful selling this stuff on Ebay with all the scammers out there...

Thanks so much, everyone! So grateful that you took the time to respond.

I WAS ABLE TO CANCEL THE GUY'S BID AFTER ALL,

Great!

Do not forget to block that bidder as well.

Usually, it is A Good Thing to go with one's gut feeling.  There may or may not have been problems with that transaction, but there were certainly some indications that you were correct in cancelling the bid.
