Can you just sell for other people without using the trading assistant business on the site?
Jul 25, 2012 12:35 PM

Like if you don't care about using the logos or not, or having your name listed on the site as an assistant, and whatnot that come along with being classified as a trading assistant on the site, can't you just put an ad in the paper or Craigslist that you'll sell stuff for people via Ebay, under their own Ebay account?

As long as you have a lawyer draw up a short contract stipulating the agreed upon fees, can't you then sell for somebody who already has an Ebay account that they've used to buy stuff with, but that just don't want to be bothered selling?

I found a link to the trading assistant but don't see any advantage to it other than using logos - which, as a buyer, what do you care if there's a trading assistant logo or not, and having your name listed for people to contact you if they're interested in somebody else selling for them - which you can put in an ad yourself.

I'm just not seeing a benefit by going through Ebay's trading assistant, other than having to read a bunch terms and conditions that you'd have to be a lawyer to understand.  I think it's a lot simpler to just run an ad yourself and take it from there.

Thanks.

You do not have to be a trading assistant and you don't need a laywer.

You do need to know the laws for your state and you need to be set up as a proper business.

You also do need more FB and experience before selling other people's items. You cannot afford to really make mistakes.

Using YOUR userid, yes.

Using a client's id is not a good idea. You should never turn over access to your account to another person.

And the terms of the TA program are not hard to understand. They are very simple and basic.

Your local and state laws will be more difficult to read and understand.

Hi,

You have 19 feedbacks as a seller which isn't much experience. If you are going to sell for others you need to make sure you know the policies for selling here, otherwise you can find yourself in trouble.

As for using your client's eBay account to sell their items, don't do that. Not many people will hand over their eBay and PayPal passwords to a complete stranger. You need to sell using your own account.

You will need a contract between you and your clients and you will need to have possession of the items you are selling

You are also not allowed to use other people's accounts to transact.

You sell under YOUR account and it is you that assumes the risks and liabilities.....it is YOUR business.

If you don't have a vast knowledge of ebay and all the pitfalls, which are many, you can lose your shirt, your client's items, and get sued to boot.  I have a feeling I could ask you 10 questions right now that you can't answer.  30 good sales might be a good start, but I would wait before advertising to strangers.  Start with family and friends at a low rate so problems are less of a strain.  (Don't accept anything that won't sell for at least $40 or it isn't worth it to all parties.)

Oh - and a lawyer can write a boilerplate contract but without a thorough knowledge of ebay, a lot will be missing.

Wow - thanks everybody!

I actually did start selling for my sister - under her account because she didn't want to be bothered with the manual labor of taking the pics, taking measurements, inspecting each item, etc.  I'm not charging her, but I figured it wouldn't be a bad little business to start selling for strangers.

lol - maybe I'll stick to my day job!

You just need to cover yourself for returns, damages and Final value fees. It's all impotant stuff. Just don't turnaround immediately and give the owner their fair share prior to 45 days.
