To recyclit123 and lacemaker, and others following my fraud case.............
Dec 31, 2012 09:07 PM

Thanks, recyclit 123 for the link to the virus protection. I installed and it did discover and remove one item. Lacemaker, I don't quite understand why you think I am not doing anything about the situation. It is possible that the crook did all purchases before I changed passwords. It was not possible to change passwords from another computer. Now I have a new bank account, new debit card, new passwords, run scans from two different providers, called e-bay, called paypal, and I think I have covered my bases. Anything else? I appreciate your help, and I have been doing everything possible to prevent any future misuse of my account. thanks~!

"It is possible that the crook did all purchases before I changed passwords."

Your first post was 12/26 in which you stated someone bought the first watch using your account, listed and sold it on your account. In that post you said you changed your passwords.

The second watch was purchased by someone using your account on 12/28. You said eBay removed that listing. removed.

By your own accounting, the second watch was purchased by someone using your account after you changed your passwords.

I have provided the links to all your post regarding this situation - so others can read and perhaps offer something.

Go back and read all your previous posts and all the answers you received.

Have you Googled how keystroke loggers are installed on one's computer? Have you Googled how to remove these?

1. Everything I have read recommends changing passwords  from another computer - not on the infected computer.

2. Most everything I have read recommends backing up files to an external hard drive and re-setting the infected computer to its factory setting and reinstalling files onto a completely "clean" computer.

Many people can't perform #2 on their own hence the advice to hire a professional to do this.

"It was not possible to change passwords from another computer. Now I have a new bank account, new debit card, new passwords, run scans from two different providers, called e-bay, called paypal, and I think I have covered my bases."

If the keylogger is still imbedded in your computer, it's very possible this will happen again.

Let's hope not for your sake and the sake of the unsuspecting sellers.

With all the great advice you've been given I hope you really, really, really took the advice about getting a professional involved in all this.  This is way to serious for you to keep coming in here - even if you are getting excellent advice.  I would have a professional working with you on the computer every step of the way.  I was hit with a virus last here and my computer guy used two different anti-virus programs and then did a deep clean and still found 5 more viruses.  You need professional help.  Just my opinion.

"I installed [Malwarebytes] and it did discover and remove one item."

OK that's good. You've made a start. That was step 2 of what you were advised to do on Dec. 26 (including the advise to use Malwarebytes). It's too bad that you didn't complete all of step 1 first, which was a very important one, but if you make sure the rest of the steps are completed then you should be OK from this point on.

"I don't quite understand why you think I am not doing anything about the situation."

After the first thing you said, I don't quite understand at all how you can make this statement.

You didn't follow our suggestions, and you let the scammer steal your password (i.e. your identity) again, and the scammer managed to steal an $8,000 watch using your identity that time.

If you let this happen again, the chances are that you will be held responsible for the fraud. It's probably PayPal that is out the money, and they don't take an $8,000 loss very easily.

You seem to think that I'm being mean and overly critical -- no, I'm not.

You should be scared -- you need to be scared -- because you haven't finished protecting yourself (and others) from this scammer yet. If I can scare you enough to get you to protect yourself as well as others, then that will be a good thing.

"Anything else?"

Yes. You have now (mostly) completed the first 2 steps of what I advised you to do on Dec. 26 (5 days ago) when you first asked for help.

At this point, since you clearly had a very well-hidden Trojan Key Logger that was buried deep in your hard-drive, you need to finish the job, or it will probably hit you again.

The purpose of changing your passwords from a different computer was so that the Trojan could not know what the new passwords were. When you used your infected computer to change them, the scammer knew what they were immediately.

All you had to do was to to your public library and use a computer there. You should have made it possible.

What do you need to do now?

Your best bet is to take your computer to an expert and get it professionally cleaned.

If you're going to continue doing it yourself (and take the very real risk that you won't be able to do a thorough job, and that you may lose the thousands of dollars next time) then you need to follow all the rest of these steps (copied from your first thread Dec. 26).

You have now done #1 and #2 a, so you need to finish the rest of them, starting with #2 b..

  1. Change all your passwords -- ALL of them. Use a different computer to do this if possible.
  2. a. You need to get the virus/trojan/malware off your computer. Run your antivirus software -- the full/deep scan, not the quickie scan -- and let it clean up everything.
b.Then reboot your computer and run it again. Keep doing this until it doesn't find anything. You may need to download and run something like Malwarebytes to get it completely clean, but try your own first. Most viruses/malware will try to block you from running any antivirus, so if you have trouble wtih this, you need to get help and get it done.
  3. Change all your passwords again.
  4. Run the antivirus again. Do this every day until you are sure you are clean. Many viruses/malware will try to reinstall themselves after you try to get rid of them.

Also, when I said change ALL your passwords, I meant every password that you use on this computer, including all websites (not just ebay and PayPal). That includes especially any sites where you purchase things (like Amazon) and any financial sites that you use (banking, Quicken, brokerage accounts, 401-k, investments, etc.).

>>>>"I have been doing everything possible to prevent any future misuse of my account"<<<<<

Have you ?

I'm wondering why you have not followed the excellent advice that everyone has given you - especially lacemaker's on December 26 ?

Do you really realize the problem started with your computer and may still be in your computer ?

In addition to everything   suggested, you might also try to run your malware cleaners while your computer is in Safe Mode. That will accomplish a deeper cleaning.

And by all means seek the help of a professional to clean your computer if you cannot do it yourself.
